85. Say goodbye to those fine lines around the lips

Updated: Mar 21

Last week after our bacne blog, a client reached out asking how to treat fine lines around the lip area. Thank you for asking and inspiring me to write this blog post which will hopefully help others too.

Fine lines around the lips, also known as lip lines or perioral lines. They can be caused by a variety of factors, here's a list of the top six common causes:

1. Natural Aging:

As we age, our skin loses collagen and elasticity, which can result in the development of fine lines and wrinkles, including those around the lips.

2. Sun Exposure:

Prolonged exposure to the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays can accelerate the breakdown of collagen and elastin fibers, leading to the formation of fine lines around the lips.

3. Repetitive Facial Expressions:

Frequent puckering or pursing of the lips, such as through smoking or sipping from straws, can contribute to the development of fine lines over time.

4. Dehydration:

Lack of proper hydration can make the skin around the lips dry and prone to the appearance of fine lines.

5. Smoking:

Smoking can accelerate the aging process and lead to the formation of lip lines due to the repetitive motion of pursing the lips and the chemicals in tobacco that damage collagen and elastin.

6. Genetic Factors:

Some people may be more predisposed to developing fine lines around the lips due to their genetic makeup.

To reduce fine lines around the lips, you can follow these effective methods:

1. Hydrate and Moisturize:

Keeping your lips and the surrounding skin well-hydrated is essential. Drink plenty of water (2-3 litres daily) and apply a nourishing lip balm or moisturizer regularly to keep the area hydrated. Ingredients like Shea butter and jojoba oil are great to nourish and repair sore lips.

2. Exfoliate:

Gently exfoliate the lip and surrounding area to remove dead skin cells, which can accentuate fine lines. You can use a soft toothbrush or a gentle lip scrub once or twice a week to exfoliate.

3. Avoid Sun Exposure:

Protect your lips from harmful UV rays by applying a lip balm with SPF or using a physical barrier like a wide-brimmed hat when you're outside. Sun damage can worsen fine lines and lead to premature aging.

4. Retinol or Retinoid Products:

Topical creams or serums containing retinol or retinoids can promote collagen production and reduce the appearance of fine lines. Apply these products at night, starting with a low concentration and gradually increasing as your skin gets accustomed to it.

5. Facial Exercises:

Just like exercising can tone and strengthen muscles, specific facial exercises may help tighten the area around the lips. Gua sha stones are great to massage serums in and smooth away expression lines. Consider including exercises like smiling, puckering, and stretching your lips regularly.

6. Quit Smoking:

Smoking can accelerate the aging process and contribute to the formation of fine lines around the lips. Quitting smoking can improve overall skin health and reduce the appearance of wrinkles.

7. Consider Advanced Treatments:

If you're looking for more significant results, you may want to consult a dermatologist or cosmetic surgeon who can recommend professional treatments. These could include dermal fillers, laser resurfacing, or chemical peels, which can target fine lines around the lips.

Remember, consistent skincare and healthy lifestyle habits play a vital role in reducing fine lines naturally. Be patient, as it might take time to see noticeable improvements.
